Santa Rosa Zine Fest 2024

This outdoor, in-person event will feature tabling by local zine-makers, artists, and creators; hands-on crafts; live screen-printing; and zine-making workshops, as well as the Sonoma County Library’s BiblioBus! This event will bring together artists and creators of all experience levels to celebrate the DIY medium of the zine.

Featured Saturday workshops:

1:00-4:00 pm - Live Screen Printing with P.O.P.

Join us to print t-shirts, posters, and signs of resistance and empowerment. We will provide designs from artists in the community and equipment for public use,  all you need to bring is clothing and/or paper to print on.

PRINT | ORGANIZE | PROTEST (P.O.P.) is a network of independent artists and printers working together for radical social change. P.O.P. events are coordinated and autonomous- we work together as collaborators to coordinate action-oriented printing days and open our doors to the public to come and print shirts, signs, and posters. 

1:30-2:15 pm - Creatively Connected: Accordion-Style Books and Zines with Amanda Ayala

A place to learn and think about the accordion-style book (and zine!)  and how it has been created and used in different communities throughout history. Learn to fold and fill your own accordion-style mini zine to take home. 

Amanda Ayala (she/ella) is an interdisciplinary Xicana Indigenous working class visual artist and maker who centers people targeted by oppression and acknowledges their brilliance. She has an extensive arts and cultural practice in which she works with many different mediums ranging from watercolors, textiles, bookbinding, dance, music, and installation. 

2:30-3:15 pm - Character Creation: A Writing Workshop with Rayona Lovely Wilson 

Learn to create characters that readers relate to and care about in this writing workshop with local author Rayona Lovely Wilson. 

Rayona Lovely Wilson (they/them) is an author from Santa Rosa, California. They have been writing since they were 12, creating stories that will resonate with people of all ages. They specialize in writing young adult stories that talk about some hard truths. They deal with topics like mental health and LGBTQIA representation. Rayona wants to help as many people as they can.

3:30 - 4:15 pm - Here Comes a New Challenger: Let's Create a Character! with Gladys Ochoa (En Español)

Have you always had an idea for a new character in a story, but you’re not sure how they look? Already have a character in mind, but need to create their backstory? Or, ever wanted to make a character but have no idea how? Come on over and learn how to create one using eight prompts!

Gladys Ochoa (she/her) is an educator, cartoonist and illustrator from the outer Bay Area. She enjoys drawing the absurd situations found in life, often utilizing animals as the characters in the story. Coming from a Latinx family, she uses tongue-in-cheek storytelling to dispel negative stereotypes and celebrate her Mexican/Salvadorian heritage.
