Artists Patrick Michael Ballard and Sam Malabre met at the Games Lab at UCLA. In this conversation, they’ll talk about zines and do-it-yourself publishing as a space for performance and play. Sam and Patrick will explore the relationship between performance and tabletop roleplaying games (RPGs). Sam and Patrick will present a selection of zines and independent tabletop RPGs and will talk about non-traditional ideas of play.
Sam Malabre (they/them)
Sam Malabre is a Staff Member at the UCLA Game Lab where they run and research independent tabletop roleplaying games. At the lab, they also teach game design at the Game Lab High school Summer Institute, and they work on initiatives to acquire and archive indie and experimental games for use in classes and research.
Their own work contends with the US imperialist imaginary, escapist fantasy, and how the two intersect. They work in a variety of media: conference presentation, video essay, and digital and tabletop games.
Patrick Michael Ballard (he/they)
Patrick was the noun that made my face You-True. Born from spit and bile and dirt and rust and plastic and churning fields of gibberish, an art was birthed into the sess like Diagram-of-Profession—one I will now try to wear for you even though it hurts: “Patrick Michael Ballard is an artist casting affective atmospheres for tuning collective story organs. Employing nonsensical sculpture divinations, neological weirdings of poetry and pedantry in equal measure, psychomagical parlour games, puppetry and performance works doodoo a theater of impossible selves under regimes of object permanence; many forms sputter out.” Watch them go!
